Griffa tokens: where they come from and what they buy

Checked against Mad Max (2015) Patch 4 · November 3, 2026

Griffa tokens are the second currency of Mad Max, spent on Max’s own abilities rather than on the car. They arrive slowly, one challenge or Legend milestone at a time, and each ability has up to ten levels, so it is easy to wonder what to buy first. The editor shows your token count, lists every ability with its level, and lets you set them.

Where tokens come from

  • Raising Max’s Legend level.
  • Reaching Legendary rank in Death Runs.
  • Completing Legend encounters and many of the game’s challenges.

Plenty of those come while you play. Others, like long collection challenges, take hours, which is where a stalled token count tends to come from.

What the abilities do

Griffa’s list on the Upgrades tab is Max’s own improvement, separate from the Magnum Opus. A new game starts every ability at level 0, and most go up to 10.

  • Survival: Health, Canteen size, Metabolism, Food stamina, Water collected.
  • Scavenging: Scrap collected, Ammo collected, Cheaper stronghold projects. These make scrap go further.
  • Fighting: Melee weapon damage, Weapon mastery, Critical hits, Fury time.
  • The car and the rest: Fuel mileage, Loot durability and Revive cost.

The game’s own list also contains a few entries that may have no effect in play, and the editor says so on the tab.

See and set tokens and abilities

  1. Close the game and Steam, and copy your save file. The editor keeps no backups, and edits are at your own risk.
  2. Open the save in the editor and go to the Statistics tab. Griffa tokens shows the count the game keeps.
  3. Open the Upgrades tab and scroll to Griffa’s abilities. Set each one to the level you want, or use Raise all to the top.
  4. Download the save and put it back over the old file (see below).

A challenge you complete in the editor gives no tokens, so set them here if you want them. See the stuck challenge guide.

A sensible route

Abilities that pay back on every trip, such as Scrap collected and Health, are a natural first choice. If you use the editor, raising only the ones you will notice keeps the game feeling earned.

This is for your own offline single-player game. Changing levels changes how the game plays, and the editor does not make backups, so keep a copy of your original save.

Put the edited save back

Download the save, close the game and Steam, and copy the downloaded file over the original in your Steam user data folder (userdata/<your id>/234140/remote), keeping the same name. Steam Cloud may otherwise put its own copy back, so replace the file while Steam is closed, or turn Steam Cloud off for Mad Max first.
