Wasted talent points: see what you spent and learn a different skill
Checked against The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition game files · October 30, 2026
Talent points are easy to waste in The Witcher 2: one click on the wrong skill in the character panel and the point is gone. Players on the Steam and GOG forums describe misclicked points they could not get back, and the game has no everyday way to reset a build. Your save records every skill Geralt learned, and the editor shows them as the game's skill trees. It can forget a skill, which gives the point back, and learn another one in its place.
What goes wrong with talent points
- A point went into the wrong skill, usually a misclick, or a skill that turned out to be weaker than it looked.
- The build no longer fits: you chose swords and now you want signs, or the other way round.
- You did not know a skill needs a neighbour first. A skill opens only once a skill next to it is learned, and the Alchemy, Magic and Swordsmanship trees open after a few points in Training.
The safest fix is an older save from before the point was spent. The editor is for when you have none, or when you simply want to try another build.
How many points there are
The game has 51 skills in four trees: 6 in Training, and 15 each in Swordsmanship, Alchemy and Magic. Every skill has two levels, and each level costs one talent point, so there are 102 levels to buy in all.
In the saves we checked, Geralt had one unspent point for every level above 1 (the saves had none spent). At the top level, 35, that is far fewer points than there are skill levels, so a build is a choice, and a wasted point matters.
Abilities from the story, books and trainers are separate: they cost no talent points. They are listed under Story abilities in the Skills tab.
See what you have spent
The editor reads your save in your browser. The file is not uploaded anywhere, and nothing changes unless you download an edit.
- Close the game and copy your save file (.sav) somewhere safe. The editor keeps no backups, and edits are at your own risk.
- Open the save in the editor and open the Skills tab.
- At the top you see the unspent talent points and how many are spent on skills. Under it are the four trees, drawn as in the game.
- Point at a skill to read what it does at level 1 and level 2. Learned skills are lit, and a skill that is shut says which skill opens it.
Take a point back and learn another skill
- Click the skill you want to give up and choose Forget. The talent point goes back to the unspent points.
- Click the skill you want instead and learn it. It costs a point, as in the game.
- Download the save and put it back over the old file (see below).
A skill cannot be forgotten while another learned skill depends on it. The editor tells you which one to forget first. Forget all and Learn all clear or fill a whole tree at once, so use them with care.
If the game says a skill is not available even after you learn it, check that its neighbour is learned too.
Points you did not earn
The Character tab has the unspent talent points as a number. You can raise it to try a build, and lower it again. The game gives a point with each level, so if you only want a stronger Geralt, raising the level does the same with the level abilities that come with it.
This is for your own offline single-player game. Raising points changes how the game plays, and the editor does not make backups, so keep a copy of your original save.
Put the edited save back
Download the save, close the game, and copy the downloaded .sav over the original in the gamesaves folder, keeping the same name. If Steam Cloud is on, do it while Steam is closed too, or Steam may put its own copy back.
We could not yet test every edit in the game, so check the build in the character panel after you load, and go back to your copy if anything looks wrong.
