Level too low for the chapter: check experience and set the level
Checked against The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition game files · October 30, 2026
If you skipped side quests, or took a path with fewer fights, Geralt can reach a late chapter weaker than its enemies expect. His level, experience and unspent talent points are in your save, and the editor shows them. It can set a level up to 35: the experience, the level bonuses and the talent points follow, as in the game.
How levels work
- Every level takes 1,000 experience points, and the highest level is 35.
- Each new level brings its own bonus ability (Level2, Level3 and so on, up to Level35) and one talent point.
- The talent points buy skills in the four trees. Skills are not part of the level: see wasted talent points for how they work.
Examples from saves we checked: level 5 is at 4,462 experience, level 15 at 14,292 and level 28 at 27,687, all inside the level’s own 1,000-point range.
See and set the level
The editor reads your save in your browser. The file is not uploaded anywhere, and nothing changes unless you download an edit.
- Close the game and copy your save file (.sav). The editor keeps no backups, and edits are at your own risk.
- Open the save in the editor and open the Character tab.
- Chapter and Location tell you where the save is. Under Experience you see the Level, the Experience points and the Unspent talent points.
- Type a new level. The experience moves into the new level’s range, the level abilities are added or taken away, and the unspent points go up or down by one per level.
- Then open the Skills tab and spend the new points on the skills you want.
Lowering the level takes back unspent talent points, but never forgets a skill you have already learned.
Only the experience
You can also type the experience points yourself. The editor keeps them inside the current level’s range, so a number that belongs to another level changes the level instead.
This is for your own offline single-player game. Changing the level changes how the game plays, and the editor does not make backups, so keep a copy of your original save.
Put the edited save back
Download the save, close the game, and copy the downloaded .sav over the original in the gamesaves folder, keeping the same name. With Steam Cloud on, do it while Steam is closed too.
We have not yet tested every level in the game. Load the save, look at the character panel, and go back to your copy if the numbers look wrong.
