Gear missing after a chapter change or an import: see what Geralt carries

Checked against The Witcher 2 Enhanced Edition game files · October 30, 2026

Swords, armor and trophies can seem to vanish in The Witcher 2: the prologue's gear does not follow Geralt into chapter 1 the way you expect, an item imported from The Witcher comes back as a weaker version, or a piece is simply in a bag and not worn. The save records every item Geralt carries and which ones he wears. The editor lists them with the game's own filters, and it can equip an item, change a stack or add one the game never gave you.

What players report

  • Gear from the first game does not arrive as it was. Players who import a Witcher 1 save say the best items carry over but as toned-down versions, and some of the old armor does not appear at all.
  • Items from the prologue sit in different slots at the start of chapter 1. CD PROJEKT RED's Enhanced Edition notes list a fix for this, so an older copy of the game can differ.
  • A sword, armor piece or trophy is in the inventory but not equipped, so Geralt looks unarmed or unprotected after a load.

If an older save from before the gear went missing exists, loading it is the safest way back. The editor is for when it does not.

Find the item in your save

The editor reads your save in your browser. The file is not uploaded anywhere, and nothing changes unless you download an edit.

  1. Close the game and copy your save file (.sav). The editor keeps no backups, and edits are at your own risk.
  2. Open the save in the editor and open the Inventory tab.
  3. Use the filters, which are the ones in the game: Weapons, Armor, Enhancements, Potions, Bombs, Trophies, Quest Items and the rest. The search box finds a name.
  4. Items marked equipped are worn or wielded, and those marked quick slot are on the belt. Items the game hides from the inventory, such as Geralt’s body, hair, belts and scabbards, appear only if you tick Show hidden items.

If the gear is listed, it was never lost: it only needs equipping. If it is not listed, it is gone from the save.

Equip it

Pick the sword, armor piece, gloves, boots or trophy and press Equip. Geralt wears one of each kind, so the item that was worn is taken off. Equipped items cannot be removed, so unequip one first if you want it gone.

Bombs, traps and daggers can go to a quick slot with To quick slot. There are five slots, and the tab shows how many are used.

Add an item back

Under Add an item, choose the item, set the amount and press Add. The list holds the game’s swords, armor, potions, bombs, traps, runes, armor enhancements, mutagens, ingredients and books. Added gear comes new, and you equip it in the same tab.

Be careful with quest items. They belong to a quest’s story, and added out of turn they may do nothing or confuse the quest. The editor warns about this when you pick one.

Adding items is for your own offline single-player game. We have not been able to check in the game every weapon and armor the list offers, so try a copy of your save first.

Put the edited save back

Download the save, close the game, and copy the downloaded .sav over the original in the gamesaves folder, keeping the same name. With Steam Cloud on, do it while Steam is closed too.
